⚙️Professional Development
▶️Presentation: Assessment, Grading and More.
In this presentation, I share a professional development experience for other teachers. I share five important points regarding the effective implementation of assessment. In doing so, I refer to specific real problems that I have identified at the school where I currently work at. Lastly, I also share technological tools that can be implemented for assessments.
Previous to preparing this presentation, I had to learn how to use and score formative and summative assessments and how to use different types of educational technologies to assess students for both formative and summative assessments. I also learned how to track and improve students' dispositions without adding them to the gradebook. This is the fourth point of the presentation and one of my favorite parts of this presentation because I share some charts about grading practices based on a real-case scenario. I created this based on real examples that I have used in my classes. I share Wiggins's model and actionable steps for creating a tracking system and show one example that I created. In the last part of the presentation, I also discuss the idea of "flipping the classroom".
▶️Presentation: Formative Vs Summative Scores.
I created a slideshow about the difference between formative and summative scores. The information presented is based on Chapter two of Marzano's book "Formative Assessment and Standards-Based Learning". One of Marzano's main points is that formative assessments must be scored. This is contrary to the notion that formative assessments shouldn't go into the gradebook. This piece of evidence shows that I have learned the following about assessment:
3 different uses of assessment.
How each type of assessment is scored.
The difference between formative scores and summative scores.
The difference between summative. and formative scores and instructional feedback.
After reading Marzano's views and creating this presentation, I learned that summative and formative scores are different. More importantly, I learned that formative assessments need to be graded with formative scores and not with summative scores. If you go to slide #7, you will see an example of how to provide an overall formative score.
